SAMPLE Student Interview Questions

(The interviewer should begin with a statement about using the answers to make the most appropriate placement to ensure the success and happiness of the student in the Youth Exchange program.)

  1. How did you hear about the Rotary Youth Exchange program?
  2. Do you understand the rules of the program (no driving, dating, drinking, illegal drugs, disfigurement)? Do you understand why we have these rules? Do you think the rules will be a problem for you?
  3. If selected are you willing to attend all of the training functions?
  4. Why do you want to be an exchange student?
  5. What do your parents think about becoming an exchange student?
  6. Have you traveled very much? Where did you go? With whom did you travel?
  7. Have you ever been away from your home and family for any period of time? Did you get homesick? How did you handle it?
  8. Where would you like to go if you are selected for the Rotary Youth Exchange Program?
  9. Are you willing to go to any country?
  10. Do you understand that we cannot guarantee a particular country?
  11. In addition to your school studies, what activities to you participate in at school or in your community?
  12. Do you have responsibilities at home? Please describe them.
  13. Have you studied a foreign language? How would you rate your proficiency?
  14. Are you a brave eater, willing to try new and different things? Is there anything you will not eat?
  15. Do you have any allergies?
  16. Are you now, or in the last six months, under the care of a doctor, nurse, counselor or other health care professional? What health issues are being addressed? How long has the treatment been in place? Are you taking any medications?
    (If the answer is yes to the above, the interviewer should ask how the medical issue affects daily life and school attendance. If yes, please use the letters attached to seek additional information. One letter is to the health care provider and needs to be signed by student and parents. The second letter is to the parents explaining our need to have additional information. The instruction sheet has additional information for club use.)
  17. Have you been vaccinated against COVID?
  18. How will you handle living with a family with different religious and political beliefs? Would you be willing to attend church or religious ceremonies with your host family?
  19. How will you describe the American form of government and your American lifestyle? What major issues involving the US do you feel need the most explanation to your overseas hosts?
  20. Are you willing to adjust your demeanor and appearance to fit the expectations of sponsoring and hosting Rotarians?
  21. Is there anything else you want to make sure we know before we make our final decision?
